How To Get There
The Polillo Islands are situated 30 kilometers off the north-eastern coast of Quezon Province, Luzon. It is just 45 minutes helicopter or light plane flight from Metro Manila and Palanan. It is 25 miles of the eastern coast of Luzon , and 95 air miles, (approximately 30 minutes flight time) from The Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Metro Manila.
It is 24 kilometers west of the municipality of Infanta and 27 kilometers northern west of the municipality of Real, Quezon.
You can be reached the Polilio Island by motorboats three hours via Real-Polillo in the Ungos Port and a little bit shorter via Infanta-Polillo. Or if you want a pretty long drive from Manila, about four or five hours thru land, and you have to pass through Laguna and ride a ferry boat.
It is also about a three-hour boat ride from the municipality of Real in Quezon, the Polillo towns are typically rural, with no permanent and regular public utility buses and jeepneys plying the routes from one municipality to the other, and the road system not yet well established. The most common mode of transportation is by boat and many residents have to settle for motorcycles as inland transportation. Only few of the settlers here own vehicles, although a lot of houses especially at town centers have already been renovated into big bungalows.

Polillo Group of Islands

The Polillo Group of Islands is composed of 27 small islands and islets located on the eastern coast of Luzon. It is within Quezon Province and is comprised of 5 municipalities namely: Polillo, Burdeos, Panukulan, Patnanungan and Jomalig. The first 3 municipalities are situated on the mainland (Polillo Island) while the remaining two are offshore island municipalities.

There are 145 watersheds in the Polillo archipelago (with areas ranging approximately between 1 to 10,700 hectares), 96 of which are located in Polillo mainland. Anibawan is the largest watershed in Polillo with an estimated area of 10,700 hectares and is situated in the municipalities of Polillo, Panukulan and Burdeos. It is in the Polillo mainland where the 10 largest watersheds (land area > 1,300 hectares) in the Polillo Group of Islands can be found.

The Polillo archipelago is an important biodiversity area in the Philippines. The island`s forest habitats are entirely classified as lowland forests. This group of islands is also a treasure trove of both terrestrial and marine species diversity and is home to globally important population of various threatened endemic species. Its remarkably rich biodiversity is refuge to a number of island endemic species such as the Blue Naped Parrot Tanygnathus lucionensis hybridus, Philippine Trogon Harpectes ardens minor, Tarictic Hornbill Penelopides manillae subnigra, Polillo forest frog Platymantis polillensis, Polillo green-scaled gecko Pseudogecko smaragdinus, Polillo White-browed Shama, and Polillo Crested Goshawk. Other endemic species noted in the area and endemic to the Philippines are Gray`s monitor lizard Varanus olivaceus, Philippine Cockatoo Cacatua haematuropygia, Philippine crocodile Crocodylus mindoroensis, Philippine wild pig Sus philippensis, and Philippine brown deer Cervus philippensis, among others.

However, the area´s rich biodiversity is threatened by the loss and degradation of natural habitats. The Polillo archipelago was ranked 8th in the country for the fastest rate of deforestation. This underscores the need to institute conservation measures to prevent loss of habitats and important wildlife.

The Local Government Units (LGUs) of Polillos declared the area as a biologically important site for conservation through a local legislative process by municipal governments in consultation with relevant communities, concerned authorities and other key stakeholders. They made use of the Local Government Code of 1991 as the main policy framework to ensure local ownership of the declared biodiversity important sites as `Local Conservation Areas` (LCAs) covering more than 7,000 hectares of biologically important sites. The LCA concept was also an innovative alternative conservation modality to the conventional and nationally driven protected areas system of the Philippines. The declaration of these LCAs further led to a collaborative management by different stakeholders.

The NewCAPP is working closely with its partners - the Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. (PBCFI), the Polillo Islands Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. (PIBCFI), the Peoples Organizations, the LGUs and the DENR Region 4A - in strengthening the existing management regime in the area.
